Last month, President Donald Trump — in racist language that was later condemned by a House resolution — told four progressive Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Three of the four were born in the US, and Omar is a naturalized US citizen.
The progressive lawmaker was born in Somalia but came to the US as a refugee in 2000 and became an American citizen when she was 17, according to the New York Times.
“Every single member of this institution — Democratic and Republican — should join us in condemning the President’s racist tweets. To do anything less would be a shocking rejection of our values and a shameful abdication of our oath of office to protect the American people,” Pelosi said.
During the rally, Trump did not mention the four congresswomen by name, and no “send her back” chants broke out.
