“So grateful for the honor to return to Mother Africa,” Omar tweeted of the trip. She and Pelosi are visiting as part of a trip that several members of the Congressional Black Caucus took to pay homage to the 400th anniversary of American slave trade.

Last month, President Donald Trump — in racist language that was later condemned by a House resolution — told four progressive Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Three of the four were born in the US, and Omar is a naturalized US citizen.

After Trump’s tweets, the crowd at a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, broke into chants of “send her back,” and Trump made no effort to stop the chant.

The progressive lawmaker was born in Somalia but came to the US as a refugee in 2000 and became an American citizen when she was 17, according to the New York Times.

Pelosi condemned Trump’s comments and the House of Representatives passed a resolution calling them racist.

“Every single member of this institution — Democratic and Republican — should join us in condemning the President’s racist tweets. To do anything less would be a shocking rejection of our values and a shameful abdication of our oath of office to protect the American people,” Pelosi said.

Ahead of another Trump rally in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thursday, the first one since his North Carolina rally where the “send her back” chants broke out, the President said he didn’t know if his supporters would yell “send her back”, but said he “prefers that they don’t.”

During the rally, Trump did not mention the four congresswomen by name, and no “send her back” chants broke out.
